At MetroWest Veterinary Clinic, we’re committed to providing local pets with compassionate, personalized, and comprehensive veterinary care. We want you and your beloved companion to enjoy your lives together for many years to come. That’s why we place such a strong emphasis on wellness services and preventative care, which includes vaccinations for your dog and cat.

Our Customized Dog & Cat Vaccination Recommendations

Our vets recommend that all puppies and kittens have a vaccination protocol established as soon as possible to protect them from viruses and diseases, some of which can be fatal. Your dog and cat’s vaccination needs will vary depending upon factors such as their age, activity level, health status, lifestyle, likelihood of disease exposure, frequency of travel, etc. After conducting your pet’s wellness exam, we’ll design a vaccine schedule that’s tailored to their specific healthcare needs.

Here’s an example to demonstrate how our veterinarians could personalize your pet’s vaccination protocol: The vaccinations for rabies and DHHP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus) are core, or essential, vaccines for dogs. For cats, the rabies and FVRCP (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia) vaccines are considered to be essential. Vets will automatically require that your pet receive these vaccines.

There are other vaccines that are non-core. These vaccines are recommended by vets based on the factors listed above. For example, if your cat is not strictly an indoor pet and will be spending a considerable amount of time outside, then your vet will prescribe the vaccination for feline leukemia. If your dog may encounter a dog they’re not familiar with (in your neighborhood, in our waiting area, at daycare, etc.), Bordetella (kennel cough) and CIV (canine influenza) vaccines will be recommended. The leptospirosis vaccine is another one that we recommend.
